| Summary: | In nineteenth-century France, the Catholic Church considered sacred eloquence as a weapon in the fight against the secularization process and the Principles of 1789. This essay focuses on one of the main French clergymen devoted to preaching in the second half of the century: the Dominican friar Jacques Monsabré (1827-1907), who for almost twenty years was Lent preacher at Notre-Dame in Paris (1872-1890). His many sermons touched a variety of topics, but the cult of saints was crucial to Monsabré, who often praised figures such as the Virgin Mary, Monica, Vincent de Paul, Jean-Baptiste de La Salle and Joan of Arc. In his eyes, they symbolized the values he believed were necessary in order to rebuild a Christian society: humility, discipline, chastity, charity, patriotism, etc. |
