| Summary: | This paper analyzes the correspondence between the Apostolic Delegate, Luigi Matera, the Secretary of State of the Holy See, and argentine bishops during the period 1880-1883. Its aim is to reconstruct positions and strategies taken by catholic hierarchies in search of the strengthen of argentine church. The differences between bishops and Apostolic Delegate are specially considered. Thus, I try to discuss the classic interpretation that took this episode as the natural outcome of a gradual process of distancing between "laicist State" and "ultramontane church". The intransigency that characterized the Holy See in these years was often put aside due to the benefits that ancient gallican practices still could bring to local churches. |
