| Summary: | This article aims to offer a new reading of nineteenth-century Catholicism through the Latin American case in the second half of the nineteenth century. The goal is to show how the periphery was not merely a passive recipient of the currents coming from Europe and Rome, but actively contributed to shaping world Catholicism through new formulas for bringing religion into the new political regimes. In this way, we will focus on how Latin American Catholicism dialogued early on with two key elements of modern politics: the Church-State separation and the republican form of government. Unlike its European counterparts, Latin American Ultramontanism was not linked to any kind of legitimism and assumed the parliamentary logic and the republican form of government, anticipating some of the conclusions that the Catholic Church would embrace in the twentieth century. |
