Description
Summary:The 19th century was the stage of profound transformations in Catholicism on an international scale; from the crumbling of the material framework in which the sovereignty of the popes had been exercised for centuries, to the fracture of the monopolistic claim of a Church with no shortage of centripetal forces and confronted with new ideologies. Roman Catholicism emerged gracefully from the confrontation with "modernity" by renewing its stance towards the modern world along with its representation of the Catholic universe. The Hispanic-American experience played an active role in these mutations, due not only to the numerical weight of a community of believers, but also to the particular ways in which Catholicism was combined with republicanism and confronted (even mixed with) liberal radicalism. This article explores the ways in which that experience crossed the Atlantic and shaped the profile of a renewed Catholicism with which the Catholic Church emerged from the long crisis of the revolutionary era.
