Summary: | The article analyses CCEO c. 589 on the preparation of the Christian faithful who are to be sent as missionaries. While demanding a suitable formation of the future missionaries, the canon requires specifically that they are to be qualified in skills and ability necessary for evangelisation, they should have suitable formation in missiology and missionary spirituality, and they should be instructed in the history and culture of the people evangelised. This demans is made from both native and non-native missionaries. The study enquires why the missionaries should be prepared in these areas but come out with the evident conclusion that their preparation should not be limited to them, but should be much wider aiming at an integral formation. Thus, after making an overview of the canon's sources (Vatican II documents have a pride of place), the study deals with the reasons for and methods of missionary formation. Moreover, the study introduces other CCEO canons related to evangelisation in order to place c. 589 in the right perspective. |
