We have focused it on the last third of the 17th century, and more specifically during the incumbency of Francisco Aguiar y Seijas in the seat of Mexico. We analyze the devotion to the saints, and in particular to the Tridentine saints, by means of the confraternities dedicated to them, their propagation, and geographical location. The main used source is the Diary written during the general visit of the archbishop to all the territories of his jurisdiction, a rich source because, since the reform of confraternities was one of the objectives of the prelate, the information about them is abundant and precise. There was a devotion to the saints manifested in the toponyms and names of ranches and haciendas, and to a lesser extent in the dedication of the confraternities. On the other hand, there was neither an excessive specialization depending on the religious orders nor by qualities and it is perceived, by the new foundations and others already existing, the increasing presence of mixed confraternities. Finally, it has been verified that the dedication of confraternities to the saints canonized after the Council of Trent was very scarce, almost non-existent. | ||
| 520 | |a El objetivo del presente trabajo es conocer la difusión de la devoción a los santos en el arzobispado de México después del concilio de Trento. Nos hemos centrado en el último tercio del siglo XVII y más concretamente durante el gobierno de Francisco Aguiar y Seijas en la mitra de México. Se analiza la devoción a los santos, y en particular a los santos tridentinos, a través de las cofradías dedicadas a ellos, su propagación y localización geográfica. La fuente fundamental es el Diario escrito durante la visita general del arzobispo a todos los territorios de su jurisdicción, una fuente rica pues al ser la reforma de cofradías uno de los objetivos del prelado, la información sobre las mismas es abundante y precisa. Existió una devoción a los santos manifestada en los topónimos y nombres de ranchos y haciendas, y en menor medida en la dedicación de las cofradías. Por otra parte, no existió una especialización excesiva dependiendo de las órdenes religiosas ni tampoco por calidades y se percibe, por las nuevas fundaciones y otras ya existentes, la presencia, en aumento, de las cofradías mixtas. Por último, se ha comprobado que fue muy escasa, casi inexistente, la dedicación de cofradías a los santos canonizados después del concilio de Trento. | ||
