Description
Summary:The present article delves into the provisions promulgated by the Council of Trent concerning catholic associationalism and its reception in the American provincial councils. Commencing with an overview, the Council of Trent is contextualized, emphasizing its decrees aimed at elucidating Catholic doctrine and effecting reforms. Subsequently, attention is directed towards the reception of Trent in the Hispanic realms, elucidating the provisions for the convocation of provincial councils and the swift acceptance of Tridentine decrees by Philip II. The third section scrutinizes references to Catholic associationalism, particularly focusing on brotherhoods and fraternities, accentuating pastoral control measures. Lastly, an examination is conducted into reception of Trent in the American councils, highlighting disparities between the initial and subsequent ones, and elucidating how the third councils solidified Tridentine reforms in America.
