Descrição
Resumo:Research work in the archives of the Cathedral and the Archbishopric of Seville has enabled us to identify an original pontifical document by Gregory IX, dated 1227. It was addressed to the ecclesiastical curiae to protect and favour the Order of Preachers in their expansion and evangelising mission, twenty-one years before the restoration of Christian worship in Seville by Ferdinand III in 1248; therefore, it may be considered the oldest original document preserved in these archives. In this article, we analyse in depth the context in which the document was produced; we relate it to others with identical or similar content, and we trace its archival history. This allows us to assess its outstanding role as a testimony to a historical process of the late medieval Church, beyond its singular antiquity or its brief content.
