Summary: | The article studies the role played by Eusebius of Caesarea in the theological discussions at the synod of Nicaea. To this end, it examines the condemnation of Eusebius of Caesarea at the synod of Antioch (325) and its relation to the synod of Nicaea. After clarifying that Nicaea acted as a court of appeal for Eusebius, the main eyewitness accounts of the theological discussions at the synod are analysed. These are two documents almost contemporaneous with the assembly, namely Eusebius’s letter to his church (Urk. 22) and a fragment of Eustatius of Antioch (fr. 79), and the retrospective accounts that Athanasius wrote several decades after the Nicene assembly (decr. 19-20). Finally, the article offers a reconstruction of the theological deliberations of the synod of Nicaea. |
