Description
Summary:The article reflects on the dynamics of the universalization-decentralization of Catholicism, based on the Brazilian experience, with an emphasis on the second half of the 19th century. This was the moment when the directives emanating from the Holy See, in reaction to some trends of Western modernity, reached the Catholic world in its entirety, although the effects of this attempt to standardize have been filtered by national and even regional particularities. In Brazil, this process profoundly affected the relationship between the Catholic Church and the imperial state, in the context opened up by ultramontane reforms. Such reconfigurations in the relations between religion and politics are analyzed by this article through the speeches broadcast by the Catholic press. This proved to be an enlightening instrument of the dynamic of universalization and adaptation of Roman Catholicism, through which the ultramontans in Brazil turned to civil society, in an effort to model and control consciences.
