Summary: | The Petrine dogma of Vatican I had two modes of reception over the span of time separating Vatican I from Vatican II. The article considers the two interpretations. On the one hand, a maximalist interpretation, prevalent in the magisterium and the manualist tradition, strengthened the role of the primacy from the perspective of the Church as a corporate society, with a juridical and centralizing cast. On the other hand, a minority theological current of renewal, inspired by Tradition and the teaching of the Fathers, interpreted the Petrine dogma within a Church inclined to consider the pneumatological and prophetic aspect. During Vatican II, the work of some Roman theologians favoured an intermediate position between the two currents which, along the lines of Vatican I, managed to reassess the core of the primacy in its relationship to the episcopate. |
