Description
Summary:The objective is to present an overview of the relationship between church and state in Brazil in the 19th century, comprising key moments of a double process of incompatibility and discontinuity. First, the Religious Question (1872-1875), which represents the expression of an ultramontane incompatibility, supported by Pius ix, with the practice of Brazilian Catholicism, and which translates as a discontinuity between the church itself and the imperial policy. Second, the separation of state and church was in 1890, a year after the Proclamation of the Republic. This model had original features, due to the moderate aspect and the way of negotiation employed by the Brazilian episcopate. A kind of anticipation of the discontinuity of the church with the monarchical regime is identified, which is consolidated with the Ralliement in 1892, related to the French case.
