Summary: | The Promise Keepers offers an interesting site for an exploration of the characteristics of an atypical religious bureaucracy. Applying Eugene Litwak’s (1985) task specific theory to the Promise Keepers’ formal organization and small groups provides us with a framework for understanding how these two contradictory group structures function smoothly in tandem. In this exploratory study, we find that in lieu of a centralized ministry, the Seven Promises of the Promise Keepers serve both to integrate members of the small groups and to maintain an ideal distance between the small groups and the formal organization. |
