Description
Summary:This article analyses the political context and urban documentation of the Representació de l’Assumpció de Madona Sancta Maria, the first complete play in the Catalan language and one of the first ones in the broader European context engaging content-wise with the Assumption of Mary. The performance took place in September 1388 in Tarragona’s Plaça del Corral after the King’s authorisation. It was organised by a Franciscan-related Confraternity in the presence of their most famous friar: Francesc Eiximenis. The 675 verses’ text is preserved in a manuscript of the Archdiocesan Historical Archive of Tarragona, alongside annotations on the liturgical hymns and profane songs with which its interpretation ought to be realised.
