| Summary: | The contemporary scholarly exegesis on the ancient Greek thought on slavery only examines whether some philosophers denounced this institution or not. As to the significance that they may have given to it, it is rarely raised. Contrary to this tendency, this paper will examine how Plato in the Laws reveals the political significance of slavery: far from admitting it for cultural or natural reasons, he considers it a necessary category to demarcate the civic space from its outside. Such a «slavery without slaves» operates as a political frontier. El debate académico contemporáneo sobre la reflexión antigua griega acerca de la esclavitud solo examina si algunos filósofos denunciaron esta institución o no, pero no se plantea la pregunta de la significación que pueden haberle dado. En contra de esta tendencia, en este artículo se examinará cómo la reflexión platónica sobre la esclavitud en las Leyes revela su significación política: lejos de admitirla por motivos culturales o naturales, Platón la considera una categoría necesaria para delimitar el espacio político en su sentido estricto. Dicho de otro modo, se trata de una «esclavitud sin esclavos» que desempeña la función de una frontera política, la cual no implica una diferencia de naturaleza entre los esclavos y los hombres libres. |
