Either in its directly Christological version (Luther and others), or in that of a more general promise of victory of humankind against Satan (Calvin and others), the notion of "proto-gospel" no longer appears exegetically sustainable today as an interpretation of Genesis 3:15. Here we have a case in which the search for the "plain" or "literal" sense of a text acts as a corrective to established traditional readings. | ||
