| Summary: | The article discusses the message and the compositional rhetoric of the first of the seven Letters of Christ, addressed to the seven Churches in Asia Minor, included in chapters 2–3 of the Book of Revelation. The interpretation of the message of this letter, addressed to the Church in Ephesus (Rev 2,1-7), is based mainly on the study of its intra and inter-textual relations. The composition of the text, worked out according to the principles of Rhetorical Analysis, reveals the centrality of the enigmatic reproach of Christ who accuses the Church of abandoning its «first love» (4). The aim of the reproach is first of all to renew one’s personal attachment to Christ and to the brethren, expressed in the unique commandment of love. Yet the rhetorical power of Christ’s message achieves its fullness by means of its personal application and actualization in the life of the reader at any time or place. L’articolo affronta il messaggio e la retorica compositiva della prima lettera del settenario delle sette lettere di Cristo, indirizzate alle sette Chiese in Asia Minore, contenute nei cap. 2–3 dell’Apocalisse di Giovanni. L’interpretazione del messaggio di questa lettera, indirizzata alla Chiesa di Efeso (Ap 2,1-7), si basa anzitutto sullo studio dei suoi rapporti intra e intertestuali. La composizione del testo, elaborata secondo i principi dell’analisi retorica biblica, rivela la centralità dell’enigmatico rimprovero di Cristo, che accusa la Chiesa di abbandonare il suo «primo amore» (4). Lo scopo del rimprovero è anzitutto quello di rinnovare il proprio attaccamento personale a Cristo e ai fratelli, espresso nell’unico comandamento dell’amore. Eppure la forza retorica del messaggio di Cristo acquista la pienezza nella sua applicazione più personalizzata e attualizzante nella vita del lettore di ogni tempo. |
