| Summary: | This is the first volume of extracts from the chartae of the Carthusian general chapters of 1731–96, as contained in MS Grande Chartreuse 1 Cart. 16. They are not the ‘exemplares’ written by contemporary scribes at La Grande Charteuse, but copies of material made by Dom Palémon Bastin (d. 1933), a truly remarkable Carthusian historian. Although he did not have direct access to the archives of La Grande Chartreuse, Bastin assiduously copied material from manuscripts of the order. A list of his ‘writings’ indicates more than 48 items, including a large number of chronicles. He transcribed six large volumes of material from the chartae of the Carthusian order for the years 1275 to 1906, and was meticulous in citing his sources. |
