Summary:This article deals with the reception of the story of David and Batsebah (2Sam 11) within painting investigated by analyzing the interpretation of the story by Francesco di Cristofano Bigi, Peter Paul Rubens, and Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn. The author argues that the visualization of the story follows different settings of priorities. While the picture of Francesco di Cristofano Bigi displays several scenes of the story, Rubens and Rembrandt on the person of Batsebah. Rubens emphasizes the beauty of the woman and calls on the recipient’s virtue not to imitate David’s acting. Rembrandt gives priority to the tragical situation of Batsebah reflecting her purity. Investigating the focus of each painting the author reflects the meaning of image viewing for the student’s text reception. She shows that the analysis of visual arts leads the students to a more intensive reception of biblical texts.
