Description
Summary:In the sixty years since Vatican II, the principle of the hierarchy of truths has rarely been applied in the exercise of the magisterium or in weighing the faith shared between the Catholic Church and other Christian communions. Pope Francis has acknowledged that Catholics still have need for a "fitting sense of proportion" in the expression of faith. This paper examines the origins of the principal and its meaning in the elaboration of Unitatis redintegratio 11 and suggests that the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification opens the possibility for a renewed reception, one that takes seriously the soteriological horizon of the foundation of faith.
