Summary: | The aim of the article is to provide an overview of the arguments supporting the possibility of willing evil qua evil. The attention is focused on some important scholastic theologians, from XIVth century up to the first half of the XVIIth century, who rejected the principle according to which ‘what is wanted is always wanted under the aspect of goodness (sub ratione boni)’. These theologians grounded their theories on a voluntaristic framework. Freedom is conceived like an absolute power, nearly without limits, able to want what is good as well as what is evil for the sake of evil. |
