| Summary: | In this short text I would like to propose a slightly diff erent, perhaps even new, interpretation of the Greccio scene. I see in it a sort of "exit" of Francis from the dark night, whose origins can be dated to 1220, when Francis returned from his eastern mission. The causes were diff erent. After the painful and unhappy missionary experiences in Egypt and Palestine, after the diffi culties encountered in the formation of the religious community, which he had initiated, and due to the progressive fragility of his body, God, guiding him through the dark night, turned to him and manifested himself more and more as a good and loving Father, Lord of all - to Christians, Jews, Muslims and others. The dark night had distanced him from the sure faith rigidifi ed in habitual gestures, opening him to a new and deeper experience. The second experience of the dark night brought Francis to an even higher level of mysticism, immersing himself even more in communion (harmony) with God and with everything that was his work. Unity with Creation is expressed to the highest degree in the Canticle of Brother Sun, composed between the winter and spring of 1225. Francis' thought and soul, purifi ed, fresh from the experience of the dark night, now move in a dimension that only sees "brothers" and "sisters". The whole world, all creation, every creature of the Divine Artist, is domestic. They are no longer near or far, friends or strangers, loved ones or enemies. The world is the "house" of the heavenly Father. In questo breve testo vorrei proporre un’interpretazione leggermente diversa, forse addirittura nuova, della scena di Greccio. Vi vedo una sorta di "uscita" di Francesco dalla notte oscura, le cui origini possono essere datate al 1220, quando Francesco tornò dalla sua missione orientale. Le cause furono diverse. Dopo le dolorose e infelici esperienze missionarie in Egitto e in Palestina, dopo le diffi coltà incontrate nella formazione della comunità religiosa, a cui ha dato l'inizio, per eff etto della progressiva fragilità del suo corpo, Dio - guidandolo attraverso la notte oscura - gli si manifestò sempre di più come Padre buono e amorevole, Signore di tutti - cristiani, ebrei, musulmani e altri. La notte oscura lo aveva allontanato dalla fede sicura irrigidita in gesti abitudinari, aprendolo a una nuova e più profonda esperienza. La seconda esperienza della notte oscura portò Francesco a un gradino ancora più alto di misticismo, si immerse ancora di più nella comunione (armonia) con Dio e con tutto ciò che era Sua opera. L'unità con il Creato viene espressa al massimo grado nel Cantico del frate Sole, composto tra l'inverno e la primavera del 1225. Il pensiero e l'anima di Francesco, purifi cata, fresca dell'esperienza della notte oscura, ormai si muovono in una dimensione che vede soltanto "fratelli" e "sorelle". Tutto il mondo, tutto il creato, ogni creatura del Divino Artista, è domestica. Non vi sono più vicini o lontani, amici o estranei, cari o nemici. Il mondo è la "casa" del Padre celeste. |
