Summary: | When it comes to abuse in the Church, silence, both on the part of institutional figures and of the victims, who are often forced to remain silent, seems to be one of the conditions - inherent to the contexts and the power relations in which abuse takes place - which make implementation and reiteration possible. It is often an external element, in particular the media, which undermines the system of silence. In Italy, an attitude of creeping co-clericalism of institutions, politics, and the media, combined with the strong Catholic cultural heritage of the population, makes this silence even more impenetrable. Raising awareness and consciousness at a fundamental level is more urgent than ever. |
