Description
Summary:This study sets St. Jerome’s ambivalent connection with ancient philosophy in the Roman context of the late fourth century: Ambrosiaster as much as Jerome considers philosophy a dialectical exercise. He also uses the antithesis between philosophers and fishermen apostles in order to theorise unpretentious style in exegesis. However, he does not reject the legacy of classical culture. At the same time, he suggests a prudential and selective use of philosophy through the metaphor of the "Beauty Prisoner". Philosophy is seen as an anticipation of ascetic life and it is conceived as "true philosophy". Furthemore, philosophy makes its contribution to the biblical exegesis both from a methodological point of view and content on the basis of the tripartite division: ethics, physics and logic thanks to a study based on auctoritates. According to Jerome the commentator of the Holy Writings is the true philosophus Christi since Scripture is the real Wisdom to be sought.
