Description
Summary:This article focuses on the Otomi, descendants of one of the most ancient sedentary populations in central Mexico. Warriors from this language group participated in the Spanish conquest, both as opponents and as allies of the European invaders. A generation later, Otomi warriors took part in armed colonization of the territory of the nomads on the northern frontier of New Spain. Native martial iconography, centered on the solar cult, is clearly manifest in the Huamantla map, a pictorial cartographic- historical manuscript, and in the mural paintings in the former Augustinian convent dedicated to the archangel Michael, in Ixmiquilpan, Hidalgo. Both artworks were painted in Otomi towns around the final third of the sixteenth century. These pictorial narratives demonstrate the relevance of the ancient Mesoamerican concept of "sacred war" during the colonial period. (English)
