Description
Résumé:Describes how the Catholic missions underwent significant mutations under the influence of the changing spirit of the times in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These changes were discernible in apostolic missionary policy, in missiology, and - albeit with some delay - also in missionary practice itself. The "old style" mission, strongly influenced by ultramontanism, emphasized the motives of salvation and conversion in missionary work, which explains its preference for direct missionary methods. However, within the Chinese context, which presented the mission with so many problems, indirect missionary methods were particularly successful. Influenced by the new missionary policy and progressive missiology, the priorities in missionary work shifted from salvation and conversion to more ecclesiocentric goals. The Catholic mission in China underwent a remarkable process of professionalization, especially in the fields of health care and education.
