| Summary: | Anguish is undoubtedly an essential factor in the dynamism of Latin Christianity. The history of Lutheranism and the Calvinist doctrine of predestination are examined from this point of view. In dissociating faith in predestination from the assurance of salvation, which are linked in Calvinism, Jansenism generated a form of anguish which was sterile and disastrous for the Catholic Church. RésuméL’angoisse est sans doute un facteur essentiel du dynamisme de la chrétienté latine. L’histoire du luthéranisme et la doctrine calvinienne de la prédestination et de la sanctification sont examinées de ce point de vue. En dissociant la foi en la prédestination de la certitude du salut, liées dans le calvinisme, le jansénisme a produit une forme d’angoisse stérile et désastreuse pour l’Église catholique. |
