Summary: | Within the German speaking Protestant Churches many efforts have been made concerning a modern Church architecture, a contemporary language and music and a significant revalorization of nonverbal rites and gestures. In spite of those the outward appearance of worship seems still determined by the black talar, the official robe for Protestant preachers, rabbis and judges in the 19th century. The author inquires the development of liturgical vestment in the age of Reformation by investigating the laws and orders of Churches (both Lutheran and Reformed) of the 16th century. He finally pleads for a light robe (consisting of one or more parts) according to the Easter character of Christian worship as well as to the priesthood of all baptized. |
