| Summary: | This paper, based upon research in the denazification files of Lower Saxony, investigates religious issues and the question of historical memory in relation to the process of denazification at Göttingen University. These files illustrate many of the things already known about denazification, e.g., that most individuals subject to the process eventually received exoneration as so-called "Mitläufer". Virtually no one accepted responsibility for National Socialism. With regard to religious issues, professors at Göttingen were likely to exaggerate claims of religious faith as a means of exoneration, and they were not inclined to turn to repentance or introspection. Denazification did of course threaten one's job and career. Thus historical memory of the Third Reich seems to have begun with a process almost designed to produce systematic denial of the past. |
