Description
Summary:This paper attempts to illustrate certain aspects of political resistance as on object of historical study by focusing upon a small group, the Theological Faculty at Göttingen University, during the National Socialist era. Emanuel Hirsch, dean from 1933 to 1939, attempted to coordinate his faculty in line with National Socialism, a procedure which ran afoul of the internal struggles unleashed by the Kirchenkampf. Some professors and students courageously opposed Hirsch's efforts. However, due to their own conservative nationalism, these same professors and students seem to have supported the NS regime in general. Can their activities be labeled resistance? They fought against NS interference in their academic lives, and this put them in danger; but they did not oppose the regime or work for its overthrow. This study illustrates the relative lack of resistance to National Socialism in institutions such as the university, and it suggests that the concept of political resistance is ambiguous and complex.
