Summary: | There is a Niebuhrian irony to this timely collection of essays on Niebuhr, the latest in a succession of volumes surveying Niebuhr in contemporary context, and a second involving Richard Harries (the first was in 1986). The irony lies in its dedication page, worth quoting in full, to ‘Barack Obama, as he faces the challenges of wielding power under God and in thanksgiving for the work of Reinhold Niebuhr’. One can’t help feeling the earlier publication of essays would never have entertained a dedication to then President Ronald Reagan. Perhaps the editors were swept up in the optimistic mood of Obama’s accession, but it was not long before the Obama aura was pierced by political realities, attracting deprecation from both left and right. |
