Description
Summary:The title is interesting in its note of Niebuhr revisited. He is the comeback kid of theology, with a resurgence of interest in Niebuhr in the wake of the Iraq War, helped by President Barack Obama calling him ‘One of my favorite philosophers’. While Republican presidents were more likely to turn to Norman Vincent Peale and Billy Graham (though, it should be added, all presidents since Truman have turned to Graham), Niebuhr is the one theologian mentioned by all three of the Democratic presidents since Nixon: Carter, Clinton, and Obama. Carter wrote to Niebuhr’s widow that in his Democratic nomination acceptance speech he used Niebuhr’s idea that love must be translated into justice to be effective.
