| Summary: | There is nothing unfamiliar to the modern reader about the figure of the scholar monk. Bound by the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, obliged to recite the Divine Office, dedicated to a life which sets aside the claims of this world, the monk may, and frequently does, combine his sacred duties with scholarship and learning. The member of a religious community may engage with any aspect of Christian tradition, but the study of Scripture and its exegesis occupies an especially exalted place in the story of monastic scholarship. Yet it was not always so and, without the enterprise and zeal of Jerome, matters might have been very different., This innovative book undertakes to elucidate Jerome’s pivotal role in the emergence of the scholar monk in the Latin West. |
