Summary: | A thick volume on Paul and John, on any count the two most creative theological minds in the New Testament, is likely to raise high expectations. Competent comparisons of the two are few and far between, and a reader intrigued by their similarities and differences looks forward to new insights. Alas, such hopes are disappointed at the outset. The editors point out that in the current situation, characterized by an endless flood of publications and ever new methodological reorientations, it is increasingly difficult to be competent in both fields and make real contributions to Pauline and Johannine studies. |
