Summary: | After an interval of almost twenty years, Francis Watson returns to central questions in Pauline studies. His earlier contribution, Paul, Judaism and the Gentiles (1986), came in the wake of the revolution that was initiated, in brief, by Krister Stendahl and then, decisively, by E. P. Sanders. In the last twenty years, works such as those by John Ziesler, Stephen Westerholm, and Heikki Räisänen have developed the discussion, but Watson is walking more particularly in the steps of Richard Hays, notably his Echoes of Scripture in the Letters of Paul (1989)., Watson's new book is a major work of great clarity and closeness of observation of the text. |
