| Σύνοψη: | As the author of this study is well aware, writing an orthodox biography of Jerome is a prospect that ‘the sensible historian will firmly resist’ (p. 263), simply because we do not have appropriate documentation for what might be called an external approach. Here, we are offered a chronology of Jerome's career as an appendix, but we do have a great deal of Jerome's own material, and if such crucial questions have to be left unanswered—as, for example, where or why he began to learn Hebrew (his own version is at best unreliably retrospective)—this study presents a number of different insights into the contextualisation and method of Jerome's work. |
