Summary: | On November 10, Armenia and Azerbaijan signed an agreement to end the fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh. Following the war in the years 1992-94, Armenians acquired control of that region and some predominantly Armenian surrounding territories, which was not recognized by Azerbaijan. Since then, the ceasefire held – with only occasional incidents – until the events of this year, when the Azerbaijani leadership tried, with Turkish help, to regain control of the region. In this article the genesis of this conflict and its historical background are presented. |
