Summary: | In this paper, the author looks back over three decades of engaging with practical theology in the teaching of pastoral care for Christian ministry. It explores the influence at various stages of particular modes of theological reflection: critical correlation, the pastoral cycle and habitus. A highly personal story of growth through psychodynamic encounter is interwoven with the communal story of struggles between therapeutic practitioners and the academy, which were played out at annual conferences in the early years of BIAPT. The tension between positive care and negative anxiety is traced back to biblical texts. This forms the theological reflection on a research project on church-based groups that demonstrated the need for greater understanding of their role in pastoral care. |
