| Summary: | To associate God an freedom is a priori highly problematical, for historical, theological-political, and philosophical reasons. Historical and theological on account of the religious civil wars of the 16th century. Philosophical, on account of the direction taken by the philosophers of the 17th and 18 th centuries, to give thought to the modern public-political sphere adjusting it to a rational and contractual base. It is a question of adjoining the individual's freedom to the obligation he bears towards the sovereign according to secular procedures. However, the questions of a theological and religious transcendence has not been relegated as such outside the field of the political condition. The individualism that Hobbes and Rousseau wished to call to being by is collective incorporation, justified for these two philosophers of the contract, the incompressible "need" for transcendence. This project failed. But is it not the ask of Christianity to grasp this question anew? By the conjunction that it establishes between transcendence and incarnation, Christianity disposes of the necessary theological-political requisites to rethink anew an alternity reciprocally assumed between the individual and collective poles inherent to democracy |
