Summary: | In this article, the known evidence of the Greek translation of Augustine’s De gestis Pelagii is reviewed along with two previously unknown or unnoticed sources. This will allow us to formulate some hypotheses on the number of possible translations that existed in the Greek-speaking world and a better understanding of the dissemination of this work in the centuries following Augustine’s death. Three different sources (Augustine’s letter4*, an anonymous florilegium in Codex Vatopedi236 and codex54 in Photius’ Bibliotheca) witness this translation. Our analysis will show that there is ground for claiming that the De gestis Pelagii was rendered in Greek more than once. Moreover, it will be shown the possibility that this work, included in codex54 of Photius’ Bibliotheca, is one of the sources used by Timothy of Constantinople to write his paragraph on Pelagius and Celestius in his treatise De receptione haereticorum. |
