Summary: | In the 1960s it was common to discuss earnestly "the role of the laity" in the church, usually with the suggestion that it should be a larger one. That frames the question wrongly. The laity do not have 'a role': they have all roles-in prayer, charitable work, evangelisation, education, finance, creating the next generation and so on-except the specialised role reserved to the clergy of providing the sacraments and certain aspects of spiritual leadership. It follows that the story of laypeople in the church is the major part of Catholic history. |
