Description
Summary:This article deals with the circumstances that made it possible for the brotherhoods to continue processions during the night of Good Friday in Seville despite the issuance of a Real Cedula, dated February 20, 1777, which prohibited them. It deals with the spiritual, political and economic interests that prompted his brothers to defy this state law with the complicity of the municipal and religious authorities of Seville throughout this period between 1777 and 1823. The arrest of the Assistant Pablo de Olavide in Madrid by the Inquisition in November 1776, eliminated from the city who had been the main bastion of the reforms. The affinity of the first assistant who was left in charge of the municipal government and the ecclesiastical provisor with the two brotherhoods that requested an exception in its application, guaranteed the permanence of the night from the very moment that the law should have been applied.
