Description
Summary:Through a close examination of British Library Add MS 11856, this paper shows how the literary concept of translation can be applied to medieval images. Translation will be considered as the act of representing the ideas of one language through another as well as a broader exchange of people, objects, and ideas. BL Add MS 11856 is a copy of the gospels in Arabic containing ornamental pages placed before each gospel followed by full-page Evangelist portraits. Using the framework of translation, this paper shows how common networks of exchange and individual creativity influence visual and textual choices in this manuscript.
