Summary: | The chapters in this book all originated as papers read at the Cambridge Old Testament Seminar between 2005 and 2008. Their general aim, as the editor stresses in her introduction, is to allow the Old Testament to ‘speak for itself’ on ethical questions rather than to apply a preconceived ethical stance to the text or conversely to apply it to modern ethical questions. Nevertheless, the contributors are not shy of deeming this or that action attributed to a character in the text, including God, moral or immoral, and a few seem to be motivated by the desire to clear the God of the text of the imputation of unethical behaviour. The fourteen essays are divided into two unequal groups. |
