Summary: | This will prove a useful addition to a good series. 100 pages of translated passages from Theodore are preceded by about 70 of introduction to his life and thought. The passages are well chosen; the English translation is basically reliable. The introduction and notes are rather less happy (they could have done with some sub-editing) and too much space is given to the evaluation in recent study of Theodore’s ‘orthodoxy’; I doubt whether the ancient christological debate can be accurately presented in terms of the proportion of Godhead to manhood in Christ. But anyone who reads these texts with care will acquire a good understanding of their author’s theological scope and exegetical methods. |
