Description
Summary:This volume pays tribute to the pioneering work of Vernon K. Robbins in developing ‘socio-rhetorical’ criticism. This is an integrative method which identifies literary ‘textures’ (inner-, ideological-, social-, etc.) in order to understand how texts influence the reader's sentiments and how contexts, in turn, affect discernment of texts. Essays are varied not only in respect to the material to which socio-rhetorical criticism is applied but also to the extent to which a socio-rhetorical agenda is explicitly adopted. Bernard Combrink's contribution, ‘Shame on the Hypocritical Leaders in the Church: A Socio-Rhetorical Interpretation of the Reproaches in Matthew 23’, is an example of a study which utilizes Robbins's ‘textures’ most overtly.
