Summary: | Shorn of translation, notes, and apparatus, Cyprian's little tract or lecture would occupy about 20 pages of this substantial book, whose size reflects the influence of the work on the way the Church has been conducted and understood ever since Cyprian wrote it. It is easy to understand why it has been made the celebration volume for no. 500 in the fine series of Sources Chrétiennes. Apart from a handsome paper cover over its familiar bare cardboard, it is distinguished by a lengthy Preface by Claude Dagens, Bishop of Angoulême. He argues the significance of the work in Lumen Gentium, claiming that, even though an occasional work, and despite controversial passages, it clearly presents the Church as sacramentum unitatis, held together by episcopacy rooted in Jesus Christ. |
