Description
Summary:In Emily Dickinson and the Religious Imagination, Linda Freedman embarks on an innovative analysis of the extent to which Emily Dickinson brought her theological tradition to bear on her poetry. This foray is a welcome addition to an emerging shift in how critics understand the ‘religious’ dimension of Dickinson’s writing. Freedman explains that the issue is not whether Dickinson believed in god, but, rather, the ‘allusive complexity’ (p. 2) that characterises the religious themes Dickinson injects so frequently into the text. Freedman’s word choice is telling in framing her argument. Though the gospels are central to Dickinson’s writing (p. 11), the analysis Freedman offers is ‘lateral rather than linear’ (p. 12).
