| Summary: | This book offers a particularly insightful analysis of the role of the Jews in Emperor Julian’s ethnological and religious discourse. While previous studies have often considered Julian’s rhetoric and policy towards Jews a mere instrument in his battle against Christians, Finkelstein’s research provides a more nuanced understanding of the emperor’s intellectual engagement with Jews and Judaism. Finkelstein argues that Julian’s description of the Jewish religion and ancestral laws not only undermines Christianity but also reinforces Hellenic identity. Furthermore, focusing on Antioch, where Julian resided between mid-July 362 and March 363, Finkelstein highlights the immediate circumstances and consequences of Julian’s Hellenizing campaign. |
