Description
Summary:The revival of Buddhism in Java and Bali represents a recent phenomenon, though traditions of Buddhist origin were still present in the "Siva-Buddhism" of Bali and the traditional beliefs of Chinese imigrants. The modern Buddhists movement is characterized by the influence of Theravada, by the restructuring of traditions of Chinese origin and by attempts to revive ancient Javanese traditions. Buddhists had to accomodate to the state philosophy of Pancasila and to look for integration within Indonesian society. We observe a strong tendency towards syncretism of various Buddhist traditions and the creation of particular, Indonesian forms of Buddhism. The paper concludes with a survey of the seven denominations of Indonesian Buddhism.
